Gov Montiano had an impressive military background
Manuel de Montiano (1737-1749) was one of the few governors who achieved the governorship by impressing the Council of the Indies with a list of his military achievements. Like his predecessors, he had come up through the ranks and after 24 years of service had finally become a captain. In North Africa Montiano fought two years near Oran, where he had disregarded serious wounds and fever to lead a company of grenadiers to important victories over the Moors. He also campaigned in Darien in Central America. [Note: Memorial Montiano 2/26/1737]
