A man of action, Justis was not deterred by arguments concerning ecclesiastical rights and privileges that stood as unnecessary obstacles in the way of a solution to his problem. He meant to extricate Moral from the convent by force and announced his intention to Auxiliary Bishop Buenaventura, his ally and adviser. Fearful that such action would stir up a civil-religious controversy, the cleric rushed to the convent to begin negotiations there. After some discussion he evidently persuaded the friars (and Moral) to give in to Justis, for soon after Buenaventura’s visit Moral emerged from the convent, protesting all the while that he had not sought ecclesiastical sanctuary among the Franciscans.
