Social presumptiveness was regarded severely in SA
Ch.2 The Expenses of Position
Florida, with its frequent wars, small Spanish population, and relatively few exports, might not seem a likely place for the maintenance of a gentlemanly class, known to Spaniards as hidalgos. But wealth and position are relative, and people differentiate themselves wherever there are disparities of background or belongings to be envied or flaunted. In the small society of St. Augustine, where everyone’s business was everyone else’s concern, social presumptiveness was regarded severely.
