Spanish settlement in Florida was reduced to SA alone
To consolidate their forces the Spanish again abandoned Santa Elena, and this time did not go back. [Note 15: Bartolome de Arguelles, Juan Menendez Marquez, and Pedro Lopez de San Julian, 1/23/1602.] The 12 Franciscans who arrived in 1587 ready to commence their apostolic mission found Spanish settlement contracted to a single outpost.
