Gov. Canzo was criticized for appointing a commoner to captain
One of the grievances against Governor Mendez de Canzo was that he had named one of his relatives, a common retail merchant, captain of a company and let him appoint as ensign a lad “of small fortune” who had been working in the tanner. [Note 2: Bartolome de Arguelles 8/3/1598.]
