Below the mouth of the St. Johns River, southbound travellers and haulers had their choice of land or water routes. Those on foot or horseback took the ferry of San Juan del Puerto and followed the path through a cattle range to St. Augustine, perhaps changing horses at the halfway point later known as "Veinte Millas," or "Twenty Miles."
