Oglethorpe stationed ships at the SA harbor and the route between Havana and Apalache
In the spring of 1740, encouraged by his success on the Saint John’s, Oglethorpe massed his forces in Georgia for an all-out offensive on Saint Augustine. Careful to insure naval support, he ordered one group of frigates to patrol the waters near the entrances to Saint Augustine harbor, hoping to cut off supply ships arriving from Cuba. Still another fleet of English warships was to harass the tiny half-galley’s plying the waters between Havana and Apalache and between Saint Augustine and Apalache and to seize them if at all possible.
