On June 6, using the reports of his reconnaissance group to good advantage, Oglethorpe began encircling Saint Augustine. He first ordered his principal aide, Colonel Alexander Vanderdussen, to set up artillery emplacements at Point Quartell (Point San Mateo to the Spanish), on the peninsula commanding the north side of the north entrance to Saint Augustine harbor. Here Vanderdussen mounted seven 6-pound cannon and many smaller mortars. Oglethorpe himself led 200 men onto Santa Anastasia Island, where his batteries facing the town and fort consisted of four 18-pounders, a 9-pounder, and smaller mortars with another battery of two 18-pounders on the extreme northern tip of the island. At the same time a fleet of frigates, schooners, and smaller longboats guarded the entrance to Saint Augustine harbor and gave Oglethorpe control of the sea.
