Sixteen days later on July 20 his artillerymen fired their last shot at San Marcos, and his entire force made its way back to Georgia and South Carolina. [Note 37: gov of FL to gov of Cuba 8/2/1740] For the second time in 40 years the English had failed to dislodge the Spaniards from their precarious foothold in Saint Augustine.
