Montiano believed the offensive required at least 3,000 men, four frigates carrying 40 to 50 cannon, and a large supply of artillery, pistols, muskets, swords, machetes, scaling ladders, and small boats. The governor also felt that English Negro slaves would prove decisive in insuring a Spanish victory. He predicted that slaves in Carolina would rise up to join the Spaniards and set the entire Southeast aflame. Once a Spanish victory had been won, Montiano planned to use the Negros to build a great new presidio at Saint Augustine. Evidently, there was a real basis for the governor view. Oglethorpe himself reported that 40,000 Carolina Negroes “would be either an assistance to the Invader or a Prize worth near Eight Hundred Thousand pounds in Sterling to them.” (Tepaske GSF)
