Montiano was alarmed when 12 English ships anchored off SA
Oglethorpe’s Counterattack
Not long after he had returned to Saint Augustine, Montiano faced the prospects of a new English siege. Early in September, 1742, twelve English ships anchored off the entrance to Saint Augustine’s harbor in what the governor believed to be a new invasion attempt. On September 6, surprised and worried, Montiano sent two launches to Cuba with frantic requests for help.
