His [Gov. Avendano] replacement Mendez de Canzo, had scarcely arrived in St. Augustine when the Guales rebelled, killing five friars—half of the missionary contingent in Florida. The new governor moved the loyal Indians of San Pedro temporarily nearer the Spaniards and reduced their tribute to a token six ears until their fields should begin producing. Other chiefs who came to render obedience were promised the same concession. Mendez de Canzo eventually brought the insurgents under control by driving them from their villages and burning their crops. As pacification proceeded he restored the missions, returned the people to their homes, and reinstated the tribute.
