Philip V acted on Montiano's proposal of a trading post in Apalache
In the winter of 1744 Philip V acted on Montiano’s recommendation and ordered the establishment of a trading post in Apalache. In his cedula the king gave a clear indication of his motives when he pointed out that the English had won over the Uchizes with gifts and liberal trade terms. In return, the Uchizes had raged through Florida, committing many atrocities and harassing the colonists. As a counter move the monarch ordered the Havana Company, now burdened with the responsibility of supplying Florida, to set up a new store in Apalache with a generous stock of muskets, carbines, pistols, powder, musket balls, jewelry, cloth, buttons, vermilion, bright-colored shirts, sugar, honey, rum, tobacco, pipes, and beer.
