Montiano was promoted to Panama
After 13 years in Saint Augustine, Manual de Montiano went to Panama to become governor and president of the audiencia there. Melchor de Navarrete overcame back and chest pains, particularly severe in Florida, to become governor of Yucatan. His successor, Alonso Fernandez de Heredia, followed the same path to Merida. The fate of the others who assumed the governorship is not clear, but it is plain from these examples that the king rewarded the patient, long-suffering administrator who had the misfortune of being sent to Saint Augustine. There is one question that emerges, however: was the reward worth the long years of personal sacrifice in Florida?
