In December [1754] the interim governor [Solis] urged immediate action to prevent English domination of the Uchizes and—an entirely new threat—of the Carlos Indians near Tampa Bay. As a counter move the interim governor advocated the establishment of three new Spanish outposts at Tampa Bay, the Bay of Carols, and the Bay of Espiritu Sant. Garcia made it clear, however, that with only 300 men under his command, many unfit for life in blockhouses far moved from Saint Augustine, he could do little to implement his proposal. In the end the king gave him no assistance, but cut off from sources of supply in Savannah, Charleston, and Frederica, the English traders failed to secure any permanent alliances with the Carlos.
