Absence of bloody raids did not mean the end to the governor’s activities among the Indians. In February, 1763, Governor Melchor Feliu was exultant. His agent had made alliances with the Uchizes, the grand emperor of the Lower Creeks, and chiefs of the Lower Creek Confederation; and for the first time in the 18th century the Floridians had obtained firm pledges from their most truculent Indian antagonists. To insure these alliances, the governor’s agent had showered the Indians with fine gifts, including a great quantity of rum, which made it necessary for him to “endure” a long drinking bout with the natives before returning to Saint Augustine. Unfortunately the Spaniards could not take advantage of their good fortune. Late in 1763 they had to evacuate Florida, leaving their problems to the English. (Tepaske GSF)
