The finest house in SA was sold to the crown for 1,000 ducats as the governor's residence
The value of better homes in St. Augustine rose faster than the cost of living during the 17th century, perhaps indicating houses of larger size or improved quality. In 1604 the finest house in town was appraised at 1,500 ducats and sold to the crown for 1,000 as the governor’s residence. [Note 27: Gov. Ybarra 1/8/1604; Juan Menendez Marquez and Alonso de las Alas 11/26/1609.]
