Governor Ybarra excused an Indian for unauthorized trade because of his compadrazgo relationship wit
Governor Ybarra made reference to [compadrazgo] in a letter to Padre Provincial Benito Blasco in 1605. He would, he said, pardon and release Alonso Jorge, teniente of the cacique of Nombre de Dios, for the offense of going to get stuffed mattresses from the Indians of the coast, a "new land" that he the governor was still conquering, but in future he meant to punish with rigor all disobedient caciques or tenientes, regardless of their godfathers ("sin queles valgan padrinos") (Ybarra, 1605c).
