FL was a bastian against English encroachment
After the founding of Virginia in 1607, the province stood as a Spanish bastion against English expansion into the Southeast and later blocked French pretensions to the same area. Finally, effective occupation buttressed Spanish territorial claims on Florida based on papal donation, prior discovery, and exploration.
