The most important treasure to be salvaged from wrecks, then as now, was gold and silver. When Governor Salinas went in person to the Bahamas, after the hurricane and fleet disaster of 1622, Treasurer Juan Menendez Marquez accompanied him to take charge of the bullion they expected to recover. If Indians beat other salvors to a wreck it was sometimes possible to barter with them for part of the treasure.
