Convicted Indians became forgotten slaves
Native malefactors were sent to some other presidio unless there was a labor shortage in Florida. Whether in Havana or St. Augustine, their sentence lengths were often forgotten and their prison service then became indistinguishable from slavery. [Note 35: Agustin and Juan, natives of San Juan del Puerto, el Morro, Havana 7/2/1636; Francisco Menendez Marquez and Pedro Benedit Horruytiner 7/27/1647; Juan Menendez Marquez II 1/25/1667]
