Apalache's new missions diminished from no situado
With the Dutch West India Company waging an all-out naval war on Spanish Hapsburg holdings, however, evangelization, like the Indian fund, had to take a back seat to imperial defense. In 1638, the king ordered the Caribbean situados sequestered to meet a more urgent need in Europe. Governor Damian de Vega Castro y Pardo disembarked at his post that year to find the Franciscans enduring hardships and shortages and only two missionaries at work in Apalache. Horruytiner's mission advances had gone into reverse.
