SA hoped the new wheat farm would fund a new abbacy in SA
In the 1640s there were great expectations from a wheat farm started by Governor Salazar Vallecilla on the Apalache-Timucua border. There would be other farms and much revenue, he and the royal officials thought, enough to establish an abbacy in St. Augustine similar to the one in Jamaica and keep all the tithes at home. Ponderous inquiries were set in motion, without result.
