In their new location near St. Augustine, the Tolomatos declined in number to the point that by 1658 the town had fewer than 30 men, counting caciques and principales, to accomplish its assigned tasks of carrying goods overland for the 10 or 12 leagues of the haulover and operating the ferry to San Juan del Puerto (Santiago and the Principales of Tolomato, 1658).
