In 1661, as we learn by letters from Gov. 1). Alonso de Aranguiz y Cotes to the king, Guale was invaded by Indians, ''said to be Chichumecos," but probably, as we shall see, Yuchi. From the letter of a soldier setting forth his past services it appears that these strangers sacked the churches and convents and killed many Christian Indians, but were driven off by a force sent from St. Augustine.1 (Swanton)
