In 1668 the situado was delinquent by eight years, and there were only 130 effective soldiers in the garrison, which had an authorized strength of 300. There is no evidence that any of the 8,000 Spanish refugees from Jamaica to Cuba chose to come on to Florida. (Bushnell MM)
