In the 17th century, for example, only two bishops visited Florida—Bishop Juan de las Cabezas Altamirano in 1606 and Bishop Varas Diaz Calderon in 1674. Other prelates either ignored the royal prescription that they make periodic visitations to Florida or sent their representatives to Saint Augustine. Sickness and the risks of travel served as convenient excuses for evasion of this obligation. For the Floridians, however, the bishop’s neglect of their spiritual welfare was a serious matter; without a visitation the newly baptized could not be confirmed. (Tepaske GSF)
