In the spring of 1562, however, a small group of Huguenots planted a tiny settlement in Florida, an action that immediately renewed Spanish interest in the province. The Spanish monarch Philip II saw the French as heretical intruders who must be eliminated from his domain. Indian attacks, disease, and starvation—the nemeses of previous Spanish colonizers—removed the French threat without military action, but in 1564 these same tenacious Huguenots set up a second colony (Fort Caroline)...
