The new governor of Florida had informed [Junta de Guerra] that much of the Castillo in St. Augustine which the queen had authorized would have to be torn down and redone; how his predecessors could have spent 55,926 pesos with so little to show for it, he could not fathom (Marquez Cabrera, 1680c).
