The multiplying herds around la Chua could not be left to themselves. The free food supply they presented was too dangerous an attraction in the heartland of Florida. Governor Marquez Cabrera put some of the ranchhands, including the overseer, back onto the garrison payroll and had them defend the ranch and continue its operation. (Governor Marquez Cabrera, March 20, 1686.)
