Missionary activity in the Georgia country [1600s] was not confined to the seaboard. Occasional journeys were made by the friars to the inland tribes. Westward from the Atlantic coast a line of missions stretched along the southern border all the way from Cumberland Island to the lower reaches of the Apalachicola and thence onward to Pensacola. On the banks of the Chattahoochee, near the western fringe of Georgia, a mission was planted in the village of Sabacola. Below the falls of the same stream a presidio was established in the midst of the Apalachicolas, or Lower Creeks.
