After Santa Elena was withdrawn, Santa Catalina, near the Savannah, held the border for nearly a century. Spain's main pathways between these outposts were cut through the water. Larger craft braved the storms and waves of the outer sea; smaller vessels sought the shelter of the friendly Inland Passage that winds between the mainland savannahs and the necklace of islands that front the ocean.
