[Note 1 Menendez was not the first Spaniard to visit Guale Island. In 1564 Hernando Manrique de Rojas was sent from Cuba to remove the remains of the colony left at Port Royal by Ribaut. Twelve or fifteen leagues south of Port Royal he visited a town called Guale. It was evidently identical with the Guale visited by Menendez.
