Menendez was a soldier of God as well as of the King. So he brought Jesuit missionaries to teach the natives Christianity and the elements of European civilization. Brothers Domingo Agustin and Pedro Ruiz led the way to Guale (1568). Three others soon followed. …Father Rogel went to Orista, near Port Royal, or Santa Elena. On the southern end of the Georgia littoral Menendez established another garrison called San Pedro. It was soon followed by a mission.
