The book is sound. Although Parkman (Pioneers of France in the New World) is unsympathetic toward the Spaniards, his sketch of Menendez's career possesses literary qualities lacked by that of Lowery, and is still valuable. A contemporary account is the Memorial que hizo el Doctor Gonzalo SolU de Meras, de todas las jornadas y sucesos del Adelantado Pedro Menendez de AviUs. It was published in Spanish by Ruidlaz y Caravia in his La Florida, su conquista y colonization por Pedro Menendez de AviUs (Madrid, 1893). Just recently an excellent English translation of Meras has been made by Jeannette Thurber Connor and published under the title of Pedro Menkndez de AviUs (Deland, 1923). Ruidlaz gives a good sketch of Menéndez's life, ample bibliographies, and extensive documentary appendices. His book is fundamental for the early history of the Atlantic coast.
