In 1612 the Atlantic coast was included in a new missionary province called Santa Elena, and Fray Juan de Capillas, the Georgia missionary, went to live at Havana as first provincial. New friars came in large numbers. Fray Luis de Ore, "gran teó1ogo," arrived with twenty-four workers in 1612. All through the century others followed at frequent intervals. Thirty, forty, or even fifty at a time was the usual corps in the Florida province, of which Guale was a part. Baptisms were sometimes stimulated by epidemics; at other times they were retarded by lack of funds. The friars continued to make occasional visits to Tama in the interior, and by the middle of the century they had returned to Santa Elena (Port Royal).
