Then, while he [Yeamans]returned to Barbados, Robert Sandford sailed south to explore. With him went young Dr. Henry Woodward, a man of destiny on that international border. Santa Elena was Sandford's goal. No Spaniards were there now, but "a faire woodden Crosse of the Spaniards ereccon" stood in the plaza of the town on Parris Island, and signs of preparation for new buildings were in sight. When on July 8 Sandford departed he took with him the nephew of the cacique of Santa Elena; in his place he left Dr. Woodward. A formal ceremony sealed the arrangement. The whole village being assembled, Sandford delivered Woodward into the keeping of the head chiefs and their wives. Woodward was placed beside the cacique on a throne, given the cacique's niece for a housekeeper, and endowed by the Niquesalla with "formall possession of the whole Country to hold as Tennant at Will of the right HonobIe Lords Proprietors."1 [Note 1 For the failure of the Cape Fear settlement and the founding of Charleston, see Shaftesbury Papers…
