These and other disturbances helped Cabrera to carry out his plan for removing the Guale missions. In the summer of 1686 the pirate Agramont again appeared on the coast and spread new terror. At the same time a rumor was afloat that the English were coming to destroy what was left of Guale. Glad of protection now, most of the remaining neophytes consented to move south to Santa Maria, San Juan, and Santa Cruz islands, which correspond to-day to Amelia Island, Talbot Island and the coast land to the southward. Simultaneously the military head of the province was moved from Zapala to Santa Maria. With the removal of the missions the name Guale was extended southward to include the new district.1
