The Spaniards were on the qui vive. In the very year when Woodward crossed the middle Savannah (1674) the Apalachicolas (Lower Creeks, the English called them) opportunely asked for missionaries. There may have been some connection between the two events. These tribes lived on the middle Chattahoochee below the falls. They had made more than one such petition in vain, but now their voice was heard. The English danger served as a magna vox.
