So to the Apalachicola Confederacy Fray Juan Ocón and two newcomers were sent in 1679 to set up the Cross at Sabacola, a village on the Chattahoochee a few leagues below the falls. Their hopes were destined to a shock. The Gran Cacique, or Emperor, of the Cavetas (Cowetas), head tribe of the Confederacy, had not been consulted. Three days after the friars arrived this potentate descended the river and ordered them out. Heavy-hearted, Father Ocón and his companions withdrew to Apalache.
