The way was open now for the English traders to the Apalachicolas. Woodward again led the van. With half a dozen hardy followers, in the summer of 1685 he was on the Chattahoochee, where he introduced himself to the Gran Cacique at Caveta. His presence there brought on another border clash with the Spaniards. The documents incident to it bring the Apalachicolas at that period out of hazy conjecture into the clear light of history. The Anglo-Spanish contest for western Georgia thus begun lasted till 1763.
