Late in summer he [Woodward] too departed, carried on a stretcher by the Indians, and followed by one hundred and fifty Apalachicola braves laden with peltry.1 On their way home four of his men were killed and plundered by Guale Indians, allies of the Spaniards. The English traders to Apalachicola were not yet safe from a flank attack.
