But in time good bargains told in favor of the English. Though it was no one-sided matter, in 1725 Tobias Fitch made real progress. On an official visit for Carolina he went several times back and forth among the Upper and Lower Creeks. He organized a campaign against the hated Yamassees, who now lived under the shelter of San Agustin. The Upper Creeks were friendly and readily joined the war party, but the Lower Creeks were "unserton." At Caveta Fitch encountered and struggled with a Spanish embassy from San Marcos. Old Brimins was still friendly to the English. Chipacasi had been loyal to Spain ever since the Yamassee uprising. But now, by the aid of the Emperor, Fitch won him over and he joined the campaign against the Yamassees. With the rest the English were for the time in the ascendant, but for the next thirty-five years constant vigilance was the price of success.
