England stood on the Carolina grant of 1665, which extended to 29°. Spain's reply was obvious. England could not grant what she did not possess. Charles II's paper grant had included a line of Spanish settlements all the way from Santa Catalina to San Agustin, a stretch of one hundred and fifty miles.1
