Now it was the Spaniard's turn to sound the alarm. Governor Benavides protested to Governor Nicholson. On the other side of the Atlantic a diplomatic joust was held by Newcastle and Pozobueno. England stood on the Carolina grant of 1665, which extended to 29°. Spain's reply was obvious. England could not grant what she did not possess.
