In the summer of 1740 he was joined by 3,500 troops from the northern mainland colonies, and a little later by 9,000 more from England. "A fleet such as heretofore had never been assembled in the waters of the New World was now at the disposal of the British commander." It was hoped that Vernon would next attack Havana.
