Guemes was entrusted with preparations. Havana was made the base of supplies and convoy ships. Montiano was put at the head of the expedition, with Rubiani in charge of the fleet and second in command.1 [Note 1 A Spanish view of Montiano's campaign against Georgia is contained in "The Spanish Official Account of the Attack on the Colony of Georgia in America, and of its Defeat on St. Simons Island by General James Oglethorpe," in Ga. Hist. Soc. Col., Vol. VII, Part III (Savannah, 1913), pp. 20-108.] The expedition was designed to expel the English from Georgia and to devastate South Carolina. It must "inflict a damage that will ruin and terrify them. It must burn all towns, posts, plantations and settlements." It must repay the attacks of Drake, Moore, and Oglethorpe. Above all it must recover Georgia. Two Spanish diaries tell us what happened.2 [Note 2 These are the diaries of Montiano and Casinas (ibid., 5287).] One of them was written by Arredondo.
