For several years now the country south of the Altamaha continued to be what Newcastle had suggested, an "uninhabited tract." England maintained Fort William on Cumberland Island and another small post on Jekyl Island. For a short time Carr had a plantation on Blythe Island and Heron another near by. But through continued raids from the south these plantations were abandoned, and the slender island posts alone remained.1 [Note 1 For posts on Cumberland and Jekyl, see Ga. Col. Rec., XXV, 396-397; XXVI, 28-31.] Though "deserted and unbuilt," the region remained debatable ground. Legally speaking, nothing had been settled by the war. Neither side relinquished its claim.
