As the war dragged on various peace proposals were made. One provided for a commission to try once more to settle the Carolina boundary. Spain again demanded that Georgia be evacuated, and rumors got abroad that this might come to pass. Frightened, Oglethorpe and other Trustees appealed to the Duke of Bedford. The fear was groundless, for the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle restored everything to the status quo ante helium. War being over, the Georgia regiment was now disbanded; but some sixty men were kept at the island posts, "as a sign of possession."
