Spanish reaction to the colony on the Satilla was not long left in doubt. A force of thirty-four men was sent from San Agustin to New Hanover (October, 1756). The captain bore a document which, being written in Spanish, Gray could not read. But he understood the verbal orders that the intruders must withdraw from Spanish soil; and he promised to refer the matter to his governor.
